Ice Cream Sandwich Face Unlock Tricked by Photo

Monday, November 14th, 2011

Last month in Hong Kong one of the biggest new features that was announced with Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich was the “Face Unlock” feature. This feature allows you to secure your phone by scanning your face and unlocking it the same way.

Tim Bray had stated that the new face unlock feature could not be tricked with a photograph by saying “Come on give Google a little Credit”. Of course if you look at the video above you can see that he was wrong. Not only does a photo trick the face unlock feature but it does it almost flawlessly 3 times in a row.

While the video does not seem to support its claims completely since the entire process is not documented. It does look to trick it rather well. It would be good to see the picture being taken from start to finish.

Oops, that’s a bit of a fail there, you would have thought that this would have been tested, I’ve seen this idea on TV or a film before and anyone who was thinking that a camera in 2D couldn’t recognise a photo (also in 2D) is a bit silly.

Also, what about twins? I think there is a way to go yet with this, I’m happy with putting in a number for now!
