Whats the Difference between Google Maps on Android vs iOS6?

google maps android vs ios6

The big question right now is what is the difference between Google Maps on Android verse Google Maps on iOS?  Either way after the huge fail over Apple Maps has been taken care of by Google releasing Google Maps on iOS in the App Store.  This being said you will not have the same experience and features that you get on your Android phone on the iPhone.  Google didn’t just port over their Google Maps application to iOS but rather created a new version specifically for iOS6 that lacks some of Androids native features.

Google Maps for iOS is a much cleaner and nicer looking experience although as far as features go it is lacking many.  One of the features that you will not see on the iOS version is offline maps, which tends to be a popular feature for many users.  As far as turn by turn navigation, you will see this in the iOS version although voice is not available for walking directions as it is in Android.  The iOS version of Google Maps is also missing the bike directions (the little green lines for bike paths).  Local business listings seem to be about the same on both versions.  The last feature that we notice missing from the iOS version of Google Maps is Wikipedia integration.  What this does is allow an overlay that will integrate Wikipedia listings for businesses and tourist attractions.

We have to wonder if Google left any of these features out on purpose to keep it just barely sub-par to Android.  At any event its good to see those poor souls that have been getting lost in the wilderness using Apple Maps finally get Google Maps back.  Let me know via comments below anything I missed or any input you have.

  1. I really like the old Google Maps app on my iPhone 4, I upgraded to the iPhone 5 and got lumbered with Apple’s poor attempt of mapping software. Had to jailbreak the phone just to get Google Maps back!
